Final Cut Pro Voice Isolation Not Working?
Final Cut Pro Voice Isolation can make dialogue much clearer, but it does not work equally well on every recording. If background noise is still audible, the voice sounds processed, or enabling Voice Isolation barely changes the clip, first check how the audio is configured. If the settings are correct and the result still is not usable, the original recording may need a different type of cleanup.

Check that Voice Isolation is actually enabled
Select the clip in the timeline and open the Audio inspector.
Under Audio Enhancements, enable Voice Isolation and adjust the Amount control.
Final Cut Pro also includes separate tools for Background Noise Removal and Hum Removal. They solve related but different problems, so the best setting depends on what you are hearing.
Voice Isolation prioritizes detectable human voices over other parts of the audio signal. Background Noise Removal is intended to reduce general background noise, while Hum Removal targets electrical hum.
If the enhancement controls are hidden, expand the Audio Enhancements section in the inspector.
Voice Isolation is on, but background noise remains
This does not necessarily mean something is broken.
Noise reduction becomes harder when the unwanted sound overlaps strongly with speech.
A steady laptop fan, air conditioner or room noise may be relatively straightforward to reduce. Traffic, wind, keyboard clicks, crowds, music and other voices can be more difficult because the sound changes constantly or occupies some of the same audio range as the speaker.
Increasing Voice Isolation further is not always the answer. At some point stronger processing can start damaging the voice itself.

Why Voice Isolation can make speech sound robotic or garbled
Noise and speech are not perfectly separate signals.
When background sound overlaps with the speaker's voice, stronger isolation can remove parts of the speech together with the noise. The result may sound thin, metallic, watery or unnatural.
Apple also warns that enabling Voice Isolation on several audio components playing simultaneously can produce garbled audio. If that applies to your project, try disabling Voice Isolation on some of those components and compare the result.
For a single noisy recording, try reducing the Voice Isolation amount rather than automatically pushing it to the maximum.
Check whether the problem is actually noise
Voice Isolation cannot fix every audio problem.
Clipping, microphone overload and severe distortion are different from ordinary background noise.
If the microphone clipped during recording, part of the original signal has already been lost. Noise reduction may make the recording easier to listen to, but it cannot perfectly reconstruct audio that was never captured correctly.
The same applies when another speaker, loud music or a strong sound completely covers the voice.
Try cleaning the original file separately
If Final Cut Pro is configured correctly but the result still sounds noisy or unnatural, try the original recording in a separate noise-removal tool.
Avoid repeatedly processing a version that has already been heavily cleaned. Start with the cleanest original file you have.

How to avoid the problem next time
The best cleanup is still a cleaner original recording.
When possible:
- move the microphone closer to the speaker;
- move fans and other noise sources farther from the microphone;
- avoid recording levels high enough to clip;
- use a windscreen outdoors;
- record a short test before an important shoot.
Post-production tools can reduce a lot of unwanted noise, but they work best when the voice was captured clearly in the first place.
