PHONE CALL AUDIO CLEANER
Clean Up Phone Call Recording Audio
A recorded call can contain room noise, traffic, hiss, speakerphone noise or other distractions that make the conversation harder to follow. Upload the recording to Noisero to reduce background noise and hear a cleaned preview before processing the full file.

Clean a phone call after it has been recorded
A useful conversation can still end up as a difficult recording. Calls captured through a phone, speakerphone, meeting app or external recorder may contain background noise that was barely noticeable during the conversation but becomes distracting when you listen back.
Noisero works on the recording you already have. Upload the MP3 or WAV file, let it process, and listen to the cleaned preview before deciding whether to process the full recording.
The best results happen when the speech is still present underneath the unwanted noise. If words were clipped, heavily compressed, or completely covered by another sound, noise reduction cannot perfectly reconstruct what the microphone never captured.
Common problems in recorded phone calls
- Room and background noise: Calls recorded in homes, offices, cafés or other shared spaces may include air conditioning, conversations, appliances or general room noise.
- Speakerphone noise: A call captured through a phone speaker may include room reflections, microphone distance and background sounds around the device.
- Traffic and outdoor noise: Calls recorded while travelling or walking outside can contain road noise, wind and other environmental sound around the speaker.
- Hiss and recording noise: Older recordings, low-quality microphones and compressed files may contain steady hiss or other low-level noise underneath the conversation.
How to clean up a phone call recording
- 1
Upload the recorded call. Choose the MP3 or WAV file containing the conversation you want to clean.
- 2
Listen to the cleaned preview. Noisero processes the recording and creates a preview so you can hear how the conversation sounds with less background noise.
- 3
Process the full recording. If the preview is useful, continue with the full file and download the cleaned version.
What can be improved in a recorded call?
Phone-call audio can contain several different problems at the same time. Noise reduction is useful for some of them, while others come from the original recording itself.
Background noise
Steady or moderate background noise around the speakers is usually the clearest fit for noise reduction. This can include room ambience, fans, traffic, appliances and other sounds captured together with the conversation. When the recording was made in a busy space, the guide on how to remove room noise from audio covers what to expect.
Hiss and low-level noise
A constant layer of hiss or recording noise may often be reduced when the voices remain clearly audible underneath it.
Speakerphone ambience
A speakerphone recording often captures both the call and the room around the phone. Reducing the surrounding noise can make the conversation easier to follow, although room reflections and distant microphone placement may still affect the result.
Severe distortion or clipping
If the call was clipped, heavily distorted or recorded at extremely poor quality, cleaning the background cannot restore audio information that has already been lost.
Phone-call noise is different from lost audio detail
There is an important difference between unwanted noise and missing information.
If the voices are present but surrounded by traffic, room noise or hiss, reducing the unwanted sound may make the conversation easier to hear.
If part of a word was never captured clearly because of clipping, aggressive call compression, connection problems or overlapping speakers, removing background noise cannot recreate that missing detail.
A cleaned preview is therefore more useful than promising that every bad call can be repaired.
Recorded phone calls, Zoom calls and voice recordings
A phone-call recording overlaps with other spoken-audio cleanup tasks, but the source audio can be different.
A normal voice recording may preserve a wider range of frequencies because it comes directly from the microphone. A phone or VoIP call may already have been compressed by the calling system before it was saved.
If your file came from a video meeting rather than a normal phone call, use the dedicated Zoom recording cleanup or Microsoft Teams recording cleanup guides. If it is simply a spoken recording captured directly by a microphone, the voice-recording cleanup page may be a better match.
Useful recordings to clean
Recorded conversations come in many shapes, but the cleanup task is similar: reduce the distracting sound around the speech in the file you already have.
- Recorded customer calls
- Interviews conducted by phone
- Sales calls
- Research calls
- Remote podcast interviews
- Voice conversations recorded through speakerphone
- Calls saved from conferencing tools
- Personal recorded conversations
- Phone recordings used for transcription
Clean the recording before transcription
If you plan to transcribe a recorded conversation, cleaning distracting background noise first can give the transcription tool a cleaner source file.
Noise reduction does not guarantee perfect transcription. Speaker overlap, accents, compression artifacts, missing words and poor recording quality can still affect recognition.
The useful sequence is simple: clean the recording first, then send the processed file to the transcription or meeting-analysis tool you already use.
